Exploring the function of discussion forums in MOOCs: comparing data mining and graph-based approaches

چکیده
In this paper we present an analysis (in progress) of a dataset containing forum exchanges from three different MOOCs. The forum data is enhanced because together with the exchanges and the full text, we have a description of the design and pedagogical function of forums in these courses and a certain level of detail about the users, which includes achievement, completion, and in some instances more details such as: education; employment; age; and prior MOOC exposure. Although a direct comparison between the datasets is not possible because the nature of the participants and the courses are different, what we hope to identify using graph-based techniques is a characterization of the patterns in the nature and development of communication between students and the impact of the ‘teacher presence’ in the forums. With the awareness of the differences, we hope to demonstrate that student engagement can be directed ‘bydesign’ in MOOCs: teacher presence should therefore be planned carefully in the design of large-scale courses.

Exploring the Use of MOOC Discussion Forums
Discussion forums in massive open online courses (MOOCs) are a primary means of interaction among learners and instructors. Despite their widespread use there is concern that forums are not an effective means of promoting engagement and learning. This paper examines issues relating to forums through a brief literature review and by drawing on data from a specific MOOC run by the University of W...
متن کاملTowards an Integration of Text and Graph Clustering Methods as a Lens for Studying Social Interaction in MOOCs
In this paper, we describe a novel methodology, grounded in techniques from the field of machine learning, for modeling emerging social structure as it develops in threaded discussion forums, with an eye towards application in the threaded discussions of massive open online courses (MOOCs). This modeling approach integrates two simpler, well established prior techniques, namely one related to s...

متن کاملStructural limitations of learning in a crowd: communication vulnerability and information diffusion in MOOCs
Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) bring together a global crowd of thousands of learners for several weeks or months. In theory, the openness and scale of MOOCs can promote iterative dialogue that facilitates group cognition and knowledge construction. Using data from two successive instances of a popular business strategy MOOC, we filter observed communication patterns to arrive at the "sign...
